Written by two experienced practice assessors, this Reference Guide is designed to address anxieties that many social work students have about social work theory and how it relates to practice.

This Guide provides a straightforward explanation of the major theories used in social work practice.

Contents include:

Basic concepts (values, power, empowerment, oppression and anti-oppressive practice) equality and diversity; the PCS model; social and medical models; the recovery model; social constructionism; social role valorisation; discourse analysis; feminist perspectives; black perspectives; human development; grief and loss, attachment; identity; learning theory; attribution theory; trans-theoretical model of change; models of assessment; concepts of need; strengths and resilience; risk assessment; counselling theories; CBT; REBT; BSFT; psychodynamics; transactional analysis; the drama triangle; narrative approach; behaviourist theory; group work; advocacy; community work; systems; family group conferencing; crisis intervention; task centred practice; eclecticism.

Each chapter contains questions and exercises to help students explore how the theory can be related to their practice learning experiences and a number of current students and recent graduates have contributed to the guide by exploring how they learnt to make links between theory and practice.

The book is amazing for all social work students, its an easy read and to the point. I struggled relating theory to practice on placement but this book made it seem so simple couldn't have done it with out the book. Its the best book I have bought to date for my course. I have been recommending it to everyone and those that have bought it have felt exactly the same as me. My practice educator has also seen the book and got a copy and now recommending it to all his students

Say "social work theory" to a cohort of social workers in training and you can almost hear the ensuing groans. This book takes the theory element and turns it on its head, providing a refreshing insight into how theory relates to practice. It looks to build on knowledge already held by the social work student, link that to academic work and practice and encourage it to be maintained in the world of work. The format of the book is light-hearted and could even be desribed as humorous, but it remains informative: the authors are actively involved in practice education, and there are many contributions from students whose personal expereicnes serve to allay the stereotypical fears of linking theory to practice. it highlights work that is already being done in this field and shows what can happen when the right links are made. The light bulb logo throughout the book highlights basic but realistic questions that generate thoughts leading to more in depth reflections on theory, helping to make this book to be as "straightforward" as is stated in the title. i would recommend it as an excellent starting point for social work students in training and beyond. Just a note to say that ALL of the social work students who have purchased this book are finding it is the most useful book that they have accessed for training. Even those who have been struggling to understand some of the teaching are actually reading the book from beginning to end and are using it to assist them to link theory to practice and are sharing with other students their findings.

I have recently completed my Social Work degree and found this book to be extremely useful. I intially found Social Work theory to be a daunting subject; however, with the help of this book I have now clarity on all the main Social Work theories. Although this book is aimed at students, as a practitioner I have also found it an excellent tool and reference to help undepin my assessment and indeed decision making. Thank you very much!!
