With such extensive knowledge specifications I was becoming really worried about how I'd address this. I devoured the book and it really put it all into context. The messages from research sections were great.

As a brand new Award (replacing the Registered Managers Award) the Leadership and Management for Care Services Award is intended to be relevant for managers at different levels of seniority working in the wide variety of services which are developing as part of the Government’s personalisation agenda.

The new Award has very extensive knowledge requirements which is causing some anxiety and confusion for candidates and assessors alike. This brand new Reference Guide provides the reader with the knowledge base required to meet the standards of the Award. The book takes a holistic approach – mirroring the design of the Award.

There are six sections to the Guide:

Understanding the Award

This section gives clarification about the Award, the types of evidence which a manager may be able to generate etc.

Exploring the Basic Principles

This section covers the holistic concepts which reoccur throughout the Award – for example, theory, legislation, advocacy and representation, ethical dilemmas and conflict resolution.

Manage and Develop Yourself and Your Workforce

Covering Unit A1 this section explores issues such as theories of leadership and management, self management, feedback, supervision, methods of workforce development, continuous improvement etc.

Lead and Manage Provision that Respects and Promotes rights and Responsibilities

Covering Unit B1 this section explores issues around rights, responsibilities, abuse and self harm, safeguarding, outcomes focussed practice and active support.

Develop and Maintain Systems to Manage Risk and Comply with Health and Safety Requirements

Covering Unit C1 this section explores issues around health and safety, risk assessment, positive cultures, policies and procedures, safe and healthy environments, monitoring work practices.

Lead and Manage Effective Communication

Covering Unit E1 this section explores communication within organisations and with different organisations, professional jargon, written communication and confidentiality.

The book concludes with advice on ways to ‘lace’ the qualification together in terms of choosing appropriate optional units and using the holistic knowledge base covered in the Guide.

The first publication specifically addressing the Leadership and Management Award this book has already received very positive feedback.

This reference Guide is most suitable for managers in adult services. For those working in children's services - Leadership and Management of Services for Children and Young People is now available.

I ordered a copy of Leadership and Management for Care Services in the latter part of 2009.Unfortunately, I could not use it for even two weeks. Friends kept borrowing it and I finally had to order a new one. This shows how helpful the book is.
