This was really helpful in assisting staff to understand needs and broaden their experiences.

This book replaces the popular title "Cultural Sensitivity in Social and Health Care" and is a key reference tool for social care workers and health care staff.

The first part of the book explores what the concept of cultural competence includes. It encourages the reader to be clear about their own cultural identity, explores oppression and culture and discusses how social care workers can develop the skills necessary to be a culturally competent practitioner.

In the second part of the book a number of cultures and religions are discussed, providing staff with information that is relevant in working with individuals of faith or from a minority community. Possible implications for care are clearly stated.

Contents include:-

What is cultural competence; understanding the key terms; recognising cultural diversity; aspects of culture; diversity and discrimination; understanding your own culture; communicating with people from a different cultural background; child protection and cultural diversity; culturally competent assessment practice; culturally competent organisations; specific religions and cultures – including African Caribbean culture; Buddhism; Hinduism; Judaism; Islam; Rastafarian; Sikhism; Jainism; Travellers; Christianity; Jehovah Witnesses; Chinese culture and much more

What a great book, highly recommended to anyone wanting to understand cultures, I thought I knew a lot about culture, but each page I kept thinking " I didn't know that "a must for anyone in the Social & Health Care sector

I have a number of your books and this week purchased 3 additional books one of them was cultural sensitivity in health and social care. This book has been extremley enlightening and has enabled me to understand the reasons behind the rituals and festivals within different cultures and religions. I have always been aware of these events and have understood reasons behind these events but you have gone back further in time and I have found this invaluable. I am a tutor/assessor of NVQ's at all levels and teach and assess staff who work in delivering care to ethnic minorities and these staff are also from the same backgrounds. I have not only benefitted from learning from your book about the service users beliefs and preferences but also the importance of why providing staff from the same backgrounds has such an impact on the care provided. As we are aware it has always been good practice to culturally match staff and service users but due to the increase of the later years, of more people accessing services from differing backgrounds I feel pleased that we are providing staff to meet the needs but I feel that this book also gives insight to managers of staff who are from different cultural backgrounds and they should realise that the staff who work for them providing care and support to individuals have the same rights, beliefs and preferences sometimes as the service users. I have passed this title on to managers of these services as I am hoping that should they read your book they will have a better understanding of not only their service users needs but also their staff needs when coming from differing backgrounds. another great book.
